Belize Ecotourism. A Jewel For Us All
Fortunately for Belize and Belizeans, tourism, and ecotourism, are terrific wealth producers, but without destroying the environment.
The reason is that the people of Belize had the foresight to establish rules designed to preserve the beauty and the integrity of their incredible land and sea.
They also set aside more than 30% of their gorgeous country for land and sea preserves, national parks, marine and land reserves, and national monuments.
This, of course, means the country will always remain pristine, with fabulous wildlife, and vegetation for the use and benefit of Belizeans and their visitors.
The following is an excerpt from UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program).
WHAT IS ECOTOURISM?
According to the Quebec Declaration,
it "embraces the principles of sustainable tourism... and the following principles which distinguish it from the wider concept of sustainable tourism:
Contributes actively to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage,
Includes local and indigenous communities in its planning, development and operation, contributing to their well-being,
Interprets the natural and cultural heritage of the destination to visitor,
Lends itself better to independent travelers, as well as to organized tours for small size groups".
For a country the size of Belize, only 9,000 square miles, to set aside over 3,000 square miles is remarkable, and testifies to the value Belizeans put on the wonders of nature, and their phenomenal environment. This is a sign of greatness and is probably unequaled anywhere.
