We all know about how these small Central American countries have been attacked and destroyed by certain very large governments. We also know it could never happen in Belize because Belize is a British protectorate. However, property for sale in Roatan is subject to conditions in Honduras and itís relationships with big governments.
Innocent until proven guilty is the law in Belize in criminal matters, unlike Napoleonic law (guilty until proven innocent) practiced in most of Central America and some other parts of the Caribbean.
RoatŠn, located between the islands of Utila and Guanaja, and just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Belize Cayes, is the largest of Honduras' Bay Islands. It is approximately 37 miles long (60 kilometres), and less than 5 miles (8 kilometres) wide at itís widest point.
The capital and most populated town is Coxen Hole, located in the Southwest of the island. Other important towns include French Harbor and Oak Ridge.
Located near the western hemisphere's largest barrier reef, in the Caribbean Sea (second largest worldwide after Australia's Great Barrier Reef), it has become an important cruising and diving destination in Honduras. Tourism is its most important economic sector, though fishing is also an important source of income for islanders.
In 1998, the island suffered considerable damage from Hurricane Mitch, temporarily paralyzing most commercial activity.
When we discussed Belize weather, we talked about how storms approaching from the east usually veer either to the left (south) or to the right (north) and leave Belize unscathed. Belize has only suffered one damaging hurricane in the last 60 years, Hattie in 1961. Today most buildings in Belize are built to withstand any weather. Property for sale in Roatan is subject to more hurricane activity than in Belize.
Tourism and environmental impact
While tourism has strongly contributed towards the economic development of the island, it has also altered Roatan's fragile ecosystem. Clearing property for sale in Roatan for the construction of residential complexes, as well as improper sewage and garbage disposal methods have inflicted considerable damage to the island in a time span of less than a decade.
Several efforts by environmental organizations have helped to reduce the adverse environmental impacts. Still, the long-term success of these efforts is uncertain because the inflow of tourism is likely to increase with the completion of a new international airport in the neighboring island of Utila.
There have been some instances of poor treatment of visitors by some Hondurans, while the locals in Ambergris Caye treat visitors very well indeed. They are very friendly people.
Although Spanish is spoken in mainland Honduras, the main language on the island is (Creole, Kriol) English. Government and legal is in Spanish.
Since the official language of Belize is English, those of us who are not bi or multilingual will have an easier time when dealing with government or the legal system. Most Belizeans speak Spanish, and other languages, so those whose main language is not English will fare quite well.
